Dental Implants in Sydney

OVERVIEW

How dental implants work

Dental implants are titanium screws placed into the jawbone to support a dental prosthesis (crown/bridge/denture). A natural tooth consists of a root and a crown. When you a tooth, you lose both the root and the crown. To replace the tooth, the surgeon first replaces the root with a dental implant. Time is allowed for the bone to heal and grow around the dental implant. The bone bonds with the titanium (osseointegration), creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. A support post (abutment) is then placed on the implant and a new replacement tooth (crown) is placed on top of the abutment. In some cases, a temporary replacement tooth can be attached to the implant immediately after it is placed. If all of your teeth are missing, a variety of treatment options are available in the form of full mouth implant restorations.

Dental implants are the most natural looking option, and unlike dentures, you don’t remove them for cleaning, and you can still eat the foods you love

Advantages Of Dental Implants

  • Most natural looking and permanent way to replace missing teeth
  • To the untrained eye, they appear to be the teeth you were born with
  • Greater biting force than dentures
  • Improves the appearance of ‘hollowed’ cheeks, which occurs after a tooth extraction
  • Firmly secured into the jawbone
  • Do not require support from adjacent teeth
  • Can be cleaned with normal routine at home
  • Unlike dentures, most implant retained prosthesis are fixed except overdentures

If missing or damaged teeth have left you feeling self-conscious, this tooth replacement method is the perfect option to give you back your confidence

What to Expect

Most of the patients are referred by their general dentists for dental implant placement. Direct appointments can be arranged with us by calling 1300 798 701or Requesting an appointment. Dental implant placement is a teamwork between an oral surgeon and a restorative dentist. Implants are placed by specialist oral surgeon Dr Mafaz Ullah. Following initial assessment which include detailed history, studying your dentition, 2D and 3D imaging and digital workup, dental implant surgery follows a two-step procedure. In the first step, Dr Mafaz places a single or multiple dental implants in the jaw under local or general anaesthesia.

Following the placement, a minimum of three months of healing is necessary to allow new bone growth around the posts (osseointegration), creating a stable foundation. In the 2nd step, the crown, the tooth replica, is cemented to the post usually by your referring dentist.

Placement of a dental implant is a minor surgery that usually causes only mild to moderate postoperative pain and swelling. In most cases chewing in the area of the new implant(s) will be altered for a period of time postoperatively to ensure proper healing. Normal yet careful oral hygiene should be maintained, especially on the teeth adjacent to the surgical site.

Implant types

There are many dental implant systems with significant cost variations. Dr Mafaz uses the most researched dental implants system with a long history of scientific data for his patients.

Healing time for dental implant

Dental implants usually take about 3 months to heal before the crown is placed by your referring dentist. This is the required time for the bone to fuse to the surface of the implant, a process called osseointegration. However, sometimes longer healing time is required such as in upper back jaw.

Potential risks for Dental Implants

General surgical risks are pain, infection, swelling and bleeding. Dental implants also have a risk of affecting adjacent anatomical structures. There is a very small risk of the implant not fusing to the bone, but this is a rare occurrence.
